Dopamine Design:
Dopamine is a chemical in the brain that makes you feel good. Its release is triggered by things like shopping, music, and most importantly… making your home FUN! Dopamine Design is my favorite interior trend of the year because it strays from the popular sad beige (scientific name) or gray trend - popularized by hundreds of influencers - that was starting to make everyone’s home look the same. If you’ve ever been to one of our workshops, classes or events, you know I will ALWAYS recommend colors, texture and pattern over design that feels more like a museum exhibit than a home. That is why I am ecstatic that more and more of these internet trendsetters are slowly starting to opt for a more maximalist approach that feels cozy rather than sterile.
Here are a few key takeaways to help you achieve the look.
Color Incoordination
Gone are the days of Charcoal Linen and Agreeable Gray cloaking the entire house. Sunlit Coral, Savanna Green, Jet Stream and Wild Flower are the colors spreading like wildfire. Curious what it would look like to paint each room a different color? Try it out! Your home should reflect YOU and all of your facets. Having a lively living space inspires creativity, productivity and cheer.
Maximalism
More is more is more. My favorite idiom is “more is more” for a reason. When clients come into the store with design questions, the problem is rarely that they have too much decor. The problem is typically that there isn’t enough! Not enough layers, textures, colors, groupings, etcetera… No more stowing away family heirlooms, Marie Condo purging and no more hiding greenery to avoid dusting (you probably need to dust anyway). At the end of the day Minimalism is out. Maximalism is IN!
Larger-than-Life Florals
Florals are a French Hen fave! Incorporating floral arrangements into your home can instantly uplift your space and your mood. Choose vibrant and colorful flowers to create a cheerful atmosphere. These arrangements are sure to evoke feelings of happiness and excitement, triggering dopamine release. To personalize - work with a designer on a custom floral arrangements using seasonal blooms or flowers that hold sentimental value for you and bring you joy each time you look at them.
Wallpaper
Wallpaper has made a serious and sensational comeback in recent years, and it's not just for adding patterns to walls anymore. In dopamine decor, wallpaper serves as a canvas, setting the tone for your space, infusing it with warmth and charm. When choosing wallpaper, opt for designs that make you smile. Playful patterns with a touch of whimsy can stimulate feelings of joy and creativity. Soft pastel shades and nature-inspired prints can create a soothing and tranquil environment, perfect for relaxation. Either way, your mood is sure to improve in such a fun space.
Pattern Layering
Patterns play a key role in dopamine decor. They add visual interest and depth to your space. Much like wallpaper, choose your patterns strategically to create an environment that promotes a specific mood. Geometric patterns can invoke energy and a sense of order into your space and are great for an office. Chevron, herringbone, or dots can create a lively atmosphere, while maintaining a fresh vibe. For relaxation in places like your bedroom or reading nook, consider incorporating soft, organic patterns like paisley or floral. These patterns evoke a sense of tranquility, making your space feel serene and cozy. Utilize textiles, such as curtains, throw pillows, and area rugs, to add layers of texture to your decor and appeal to your senses. Combining options with a complementary palette and opposing pattern can help strike the perfect balance, avoiding any clashing in your design.
